Dominus Gladiatus Morale Guide: Theft & Refusal

Dominus Gladiatus morale guide: high and low morale traits, theft and refusal warnings, suicide risk, Pleasure House recovery and death effects on the Ludus.

Last Updated: 2026-11-06

Morale is the quiet stat that ends runs. A gladiator with full Health and low Fatigue can still refuse to fight, steal from the Ludus or spiral into a suicide risk if their mood stays negative. The INFO card shows the current morale value, the high-morale trait and the low-morale trait, so the warning is always visible before the disaster.

Quick answer

Treat the first low-morale trait as an urgent problem. Send the gladiator to the Pleasure House, avoid deaths and pointless losses, and use the Temple for a morale reset. High morale can speed training and unlock combat traits; low morale escalates from theft to refusal to a displayed suicide risk.

What does morale control?

Morale has two layers: a numeric mood and a trait that activates at the high or low end.

State Trait examples Effect
High morale Iron Discipline, Battle Inspiration Training speed and combat performance
Neutral None Normal behaviour
Low morale Theft, Refusal to Fight Coin loss, unavailable for bookings
Critical Suicide Risk % Long-term risk of losing the gladiator

The exact trait depends on the individual. In the full-run footage I checked, Theft was described as stealing 10 coins, and Refusal to Fight removed the gladiator from arena selection. Treat those as examples, not universal values; the INFO card is the authority for your save.

What raises morale?

The verified positive sources:

  • Pleasure House: the dedicated morale building. It restores mood over a stay.
  • Temple prayer: the Temple offers a morale/religious reset; the Favor of the Gods achievement is tied to praying there.
  • Positive events: Patch 5 made positive morale effects apply immediately.
  • Winning safely: a clean win avoids the loss penalty and the death cascade.
  • Rewarding a gladiator: Patch 1 mentions a +3 morale reward action.

The Pleasure House is the reliable lever. Build it once your roster is large enough that one unhappy fighter can disrupt the training schedule. A morale collapse often travels with untreated injuries; the injuries guide → explains the critical-injury and suicide-risk interaction.

What lowers morale?

  • Losses: a defeat is a morale event as well as a Fatigue cost.
  • Deaths in the Ludus: Patch 5 made a gladiator's death affect the whole Ludus, not just the deceased.
  • Sending a gladiator to the Mines: the Pre-Launch notes say it drops morale across the Ludus; Patch 7 extended the effect to gladiators in the room.
  • Critical injuries: Patch 7 links prolonged low morale and critical injuries to a rising suicide risk.
  • Ignoring the warning: the low-morale trait itself can generate more negative events.

The Mine punishment is the clearest example of a short-term fix with a long-term cost. It removes a fighter from the arena and poisons the mood of everyone nearby.

How does the death cascade work?

When a gladiator dies, the whole Ludus takes a morale hit. That is why a single To-the-Death loss can be worse than the purse suggests: the surviving fighters become slower to train, more likely to refuse, and more expensive to stabilise.

After a death:

  1. Stop the arena schedule for at least one day.
  2. Send the most affected fighters to the Pleasure House.
  3. Check every INFO card for a new low-morale trait.
  4. Avoid another high-risk fight until the mood recovers.
  5. Do not send anyone to the Mines as punishment during the crisis.

A death is also a financial event: the equipment may drop, the funeral costs morale, and the replacement needs training time.

What is the suicide risk?

Patch 7 reworked critical injuries, low morale and suicide risk. The old behaviour could kill a maximally injured gladiator immediately. The new behaviour raises the risk for gladiators who remain at low morale for several days.

The INFO card shows a Suicide Risk percentage and a day count. If it appears:

  • Stop all arena bookings for that gladiator.
  • Fix morale before fixing the injury, or at least in parallel.
  • Use the Pleasure House and Temple.
  • Check whether a recent death or Mine punishment is the cause.

A high injury level alone is not an immediate death sentence in the current build. Prolonged neglect is the danger.

How do you recover a low-morale roster?

A recovery plan for a Ludus in trouble:

Step Action Why
1 Cancel the next arena booking Losses deepen the mood problem
2 Pleasure House for the worst fighter Direct morale recovery
3 Temple prayer for the roster Secondary reset and achievement progress
4 One safe, winnable purse A win is a positive event
5 Recheck traits Confirm the refusal/theft trait is gone
6 Resume training Training is the long-term recovery

Do not try to fix morale by buying equipment. Gear does not change the mood, and the coin spend may force you into a risky purse.

Does morale affect training?

Yes. High morale can speed training, and low morale can slow it or remove the gladiator from the schedule through refusal. The exact multiplier is not shown in the panel, so plan around the state rather than a precise percentage.

A simple rule: if a fighter has a low-morale trait, do not start a multi-day training block. Fix the mood first, then train. The block is too expensive to waste on a fighter who may refuse the next fight.

How does difficulty change morale?

Ruthless increases sabotage frequency and removes the friendly crowd start, both of which generate more losses and negative events. It does not remove the Pleasure House or Temple tools, but the margin for error is smaller.

On Classic and Forgiving, a single loss is usually recoverable with one Pleasure House stay. On Ruthless, a loss plus a death can cascade through the whole roster.

Morale is cheaper to maintain than to repair. A 3-coin Pleasure House visit before a loss is worth more than a 30-coin recovery after a death spiral.

FAQ

What is the fastest way to raise morale? The Pleasure House is the dedicated building. Temple prayer and a safe win are useful secondary options.

Can a gladiator refuse to fight permanently? Refusal is a low-morale trait, not a permanent class feature. Restore morale and the trait should clear.

Does sending a gladiator to the Mines help discipline? It removes them from the arena but lowers morale across the Ludus. It is a punishment, not a management tool.

Do deaths affect other gladiators? Yes. Patch 5 made deaths a Ludus-wide morale event.
