Dominus Gladiatus Training Guide: Skills & Ranks

Dominus Gladiatus training explained: the eight skill slots, rank times, Palus and Doctore stacking, the whip, and why arena fights cannot finish a rank.

Last Updated: 2026-11-06

Training is the slowest and most important investment in Dominus Gladiatus. A gladiator with good Health and no skill ranks loses to a smaller fighter with two trained abilities. The system is simple on the surface: pick a skill, wait 2-3 days, gain a rank. The decisions are which skills to train, when to use the Palus and Doctore, and when to stop training for a purse.

Quick answer

Train Combat first on every fighter, then one defensive or class skill. Build the Palus before the second combat skill and hire the Doctore when training is the bottleneck. Arena fights add up to 10% progress on a win and 15% on a loss, but cannot complete a rank; the last points must come from a Ludus training block.

What skills can a gladiator learn?

The release build shows eight skill slots:

Skill What it does Training time
Combat Adds attack damage at each rank (+1, +3, +5 in the panel I checked) About 3 days
Iron Body Defensive toughness 4 ranks
Last Stand Once per fight, survive a killing blow with 1 HP; higher ranks extend the invulnerability 2 ranks
Shield Guard Shield defence 3 ranks
Backstab Punishes exposed enemies 4 ranks
Net Breaker Reduces time trapped by nets by 70% About 2 days, 1 rank
Outmaneuver Positional/angle skill for Secutor-style play 2 ranks
Deadly Strike Bonus damage against low-Health targets 2 ranks

The exact rank count and training time can vary by class. Patch 3 notes that some skills are learnable by every class but with different maximum ranks, and that Dodge Roll is one of them. The panel in the build I checked listed the eight above for a Secutor; other classes may show a different mix.

Do not assume a skill is universal. Open the SKILLS panel on the individual gladiator before planning a build.

How long does a rank take?

Early ranks take about 2-3 days. Combat is the clearest example: 3 days for the first rank in the build I checked. Higher ranks may take longer, and the exact timer is shown on the skill card before you commit.

Three modifiers change the calendar:

  • Palus: +20% training speed. It costs 60 coins and one day to build.
  • Doctore: pushes training faster through discipline and the lash. The hire costs 80 coins in the staff panel I checked.
  • The whip: doubles training speed for two days. Patch 5 removed the morale penalty; Patch 7 removed the extra Fatigue from the training bonus.

The Palus and Doctore stack, but they do not remove the need to train. A 20% speed bonus on a 3-day rank saves about half a day; the whip is the bigger short-term lever.

Build the Palus before the second combat skill

The 60-coin Palus pays for itself across four or five ranks. Buying a 40-coin weapon instead delays every future skill by the same percentage.

Why can't arena fights finish a skill rank?

The Pre-Launch notes state that a gladiator can add progress to the currently trained skill during a fight: up to 10% on a win and 15% on a loss. They cannot complete the rank in the arena. If a skill is at 95%, you still need a training block in the Ludus.

This rule has two practical consequences:

  1. Do not book a fight to "finish" a skill. The last 5-15% is always Ludus time.
  2. Do book fights while a long skill is training. The progress is free as long as the fighter is healthy enough to compete.

The optimal pattern is to start a 3-day training block, take one safe purse during the block, then let the block finish on schedule. The fight contributes progress without replacing the block.

Which skills should you train first?

For a new fighter:

  1. Combat rank 1. Damage shortens fights, and shorter fights reduce incoming hits.
  2. One defensive skill. Shield Guard for Murmillo and Secutor; Iron Body as a general fallback.
  3. Combat rank 2. The second damage breakpoint is usually worth more than a utility rank.
  4. The class answer. Net Breaker for Secutor if Retiarius is common; Outmaneuver for angle pressure; Deadly Strike for finishing low-Health opponents.
  5. Last Stand once the fighter is entering high-risk purses. A one-per-fight survival tool is insurance against a bad matchup.

For Scissor, Brutal Kick and Headbutt support the aggressive close-range plan. The class wants to end fights before the opponent's defence stabilises, so damage and stun support come before a third defensive skill.

The best build guide → turns this into stat and equipment priorities; the classes guide → explains the matchup logic.

Does training continue during arena trips?

Training is a calendar activity. If a block is running, the days pass when you schedule other activities, including arena travel. The block completes on its timer, not on your attention.

That means you can train and fight in the same week, but you cannot train two skills at once on the same gladiator. Choose the skill that fixes the next matchup, not the one you eventually want.

When should you use the whip?

The Doctore's whip doubles training speed for two days. Use it when:

  • A rank is about to finish before a key fight.
  • You need a defensive skill online before a known opponent.
  • The gladiator is healthy and not needed for a purse in the next two days.

Do not use it on a fighter who is about to enter the Infirmary or sit at Fatigue 4. The whip accelerates the calendar, not recovery.

What does the Freedom Goal have to do with training?

The INFO card shows a Freedom Goal count, such as 0/12, 0/13 or 0/16 victories. That is the number of wins the gladiator needs to earn freedom. It is a long-term progression marker, not a training skill.

Winning fights advances the goal; losing does not. A fighter close to freedom is still worth training if they are your main earner, but do not over-invest in equipment for a gladiator who is about to leave the roster.

A sample training calendar

Day Action Why
1 Start Combat rank 1 First damage breakpoint
3 Safe purse while training Free 10% progress
4 Combat rank 1 completes Damage online
5 Start Shield Guard Survival for the next purse
7 Build Palus if not already built Speeds every future rank
8 Shield Guard completes Defensive plan online
9 Start Combat rank 2 Second damage breakpoint
12 Hire Doctore if reserve allows Long-term acceleration

Adjust the days to your purse schedule. The principle is one skill at a time, with fights layered on top rather than replacing training.

FAQ

Can a gladiator learn every skill? No. The panel shows a limited set, and some skills are class-specific or capped at different ranks. Check the individual SKILLS tab.

Does the Doctore's whip cost morale? No longer. Patch 5 removed the morale penalty from the whip.

Is the Palus worth it if I only train one fighter? Yes. The 20% speed bonus applies to every rank that fighter will ever learn, and the building persists for the whole roster.

Do fights give training progress on a loss? Yes, up to 15% on a loss, which is more than the 10% on a win. The catch is that losses also add 2 Fatigue and a 40% base injury chance.
